Let’s Remove Fun From Sports

The trade deadline is Monday and it has become a cynical, depressing spectacle worse even than the All Star Game. For instance, the San Francisco Giants won a game Thursday and played well. However,in the post game television show, both presenters, including former pitcher George Kontos, got all pimpy about where the money starved (you would think) ownership might peddle their best performing players. They have abandoned completely the time when it was pretended that baseball fans identified with baseball players rather than clods like Larry Baer who couldn’t field a grounder or hit water if they fell out of a boat. So far, the esteemed Buster Posey, who was the epitome of a winning player, has been mostly responsible for getting rid of Tyler Rogers, a relief pitcher who actually threw strikes and got batters out.

On that Giants post game show, they actually had a poll to determine which group of Giants players should be offered on trade. The winning reply was “anyone but Bryce Eldridge” so I guess a lot of us have drunk the Kool-Aid. That’s right:sell everybody and save the owners big money.

This is the same week that F.I.F.A. has proposed forming a partnership in international futbol with relatives of President Redact. I am rapidly losing faith with all of professional sports. Infantino is the European Trump.

Am I really supposed to root for rich people to make more money by taking the rest of us for fools? I’m going to wait for Monday. I’m going to wait to see if Buster Posey is still the smart baseball person that I think he is or if he has become just another “whatever the boss needs” sycophant. Here’s hoping.
